Windows down, heat on, and music up is the perfect recipe for enjoying a fall drive. Whether exploring your local roads or hitting the open road for a trip, you can’t go wrong with a long drive to see the colors. I have highlighted my favorite drives across NY, VT, and NH with links to addition scenic routes.

"When You Come to a Fork in the Road, Take It."
Yogi Berra

High Peaks Region
I have to start with the Adirondacks.. this has been my "back yard" for most of my life! As a frequent hiker, I am always in the High Peaks region and can attest to the beauty of the drives through that area. But the ADK park is massive! So I encourage you to explore some of the other scenic drives included in the link.
Smugglers Notch: Route 108
The famous tree tunnel. I first went to this road last fall to see it for myself. WOW did that 5 mi stretch of road outside of Smugglers Notch blow me away. Tight, curvy, and unbelievable views as you wind along the base of the surrounding mountains. Definitely one of my favorites!

Woodstock
Probable my favorite towns to visit in the fall. It is very picturesque with the small shops, church in town, covered bridge, and scenic drives branching out in all directions. In general I'd have to say Vermont is my favorite state for small tows. Highly recommend putting a few on your list and buckling up to hit them.
Kancamagus Highway
NH and specifically the White Mountain range is beautiful anytime of the year, but especially in the fall. A great mix of lakes, rivers, mountains, and everything in between. Don't miss a stop at Schilling Beer Co. in Littleton. This is my go to for post hike refueling and during the fall you get to see the colors as you enjoy the tasty food.

Get Lost
Some of the best drives that I have been on were completely unplanned. It's about having the curiosity and flexibility in your schedule. See a road that looks nice? Take it. See a dirt road you aren't sure where it leads to? Even better. This will always be my favorite way to explore and you never know what you might find!
